The At Attin children accidentally fly beyond the Barrier
Around 9 ABY, Wim, a schoolboy from At Attin, a planet sealed off by the Barrier, finds a buried hatch in a forest ravine. With his friend Neel and the girls Fern and KB, he digs out an old starship. Wim presses a button in the cockpit, the ship rises out of the ground, passes through the Barrier and jumps to hyperspace, carrying the children far from home.
Description
At Attin is a quiet forested world cut off from the rest of the galaxy by the Barrier. Its people work as analysts for the Republic's Great Work, and schoolchildren prepare for an assessment that will decide their careers. Wim, a daydreamer who loves Jedi stories, runs late for the test, takes a shortcut through the woods, falls into a ravine and spots a metal hatch in its wall before a safety droid leads him away. That evening Wim returns with his best friend Neel. They are joined by Fern, daughter of the official Fara, and her tech-savvy friend KB. The boys dig, and KB connects the hatch to her cybernetic implant, opening it. Inside, the children find the upside-down cockpit of a long-buried starship and a motionless one-eyed droid; the hatch slams shut behind them, and they must restore power to get out. KB brings the ship's systems back to life, but Wim cannot resist pressing a glowing green button. As Wim's father Wendle watches, the starship breaks out of the ground, climbs through the Barrier and jumps into hyperspace. The children end up far from their homeworld with no idea how to return, while At Attin's safety droids insist that flying past the Barrier is impossible and illegal.
