Saw Gerrera

Saw Gerrera fought under the Republic and under the Empire alike; only the enemy changed. While the Clone Wars raged, the Republic was on his side, arming and training his rebels, but once the Empire came to power Saw pointed those weapons at his old backers. He gained a name as a capable commander, though he became more merciless with time. He was in no hurry to join forces with other insurgents: with people like Luthen Rael he dealt only on occasion, and he fought by his own rules.

Onderon was Saw's home. After King Ramsis Dendup was deposed and the new ruler drew the planet into an alliance with the Separatists, the young Gerrera stood with the old monarch's supporters who would not recognize the new regime. Expelled from the capital, Iziz, he and Steela, his sister, built a rebel movement in the jungle; part of his combat training came from Jedi. Later, at the request of Lyra and Galen Erso, Saw rescued Jyn, their daughter, and brought her up as his own, but in time he left the girl, afraid it would come out whose child she was.

Jedha became the last battlefield of his struggle. There, having already lost a leg and depending on a breathing suit, Saw spent a long time fighting the Imperial occupiers. His Partisans seized Bodhi Rook, a defector carrying a message from Galen Erso, and Gerrera played the recording for Jyn. Within that same hour a test shot from the battle station destroyed the Holy City. Saw stayed in his hideout and died there.
