Description
Shmi Skywalker and her young son Anakin were owned first by the Hutt Gardulla and then by the Mos Espa junk dealer Watto. According to Shmi, the boy had no father: she carried him and raised him on her own. Despite their poverty she tried to give him a normal childhood, teaching him to repair machines, to look after himself and to show compassion to others.
When Qui-Gon Jinn and his companions from a damaged ship took shelter from a sandstorm in their home, Anakin offered to win them the money they needed in a podrace. Shmi objected at first but gave in. She watched the Boonta Eve race and, after her son won, learned that the wager freed only him. Setting her own feelings aside, she convinced Anakin to leave with the Jedi without her.
Years later Watto sold her to the moisture farmer Cliegg Lars, who freed Shmi and married her, making her stepmother to Owen Lars. Shortly before the Clone Wars began she was abducted by Tusken Raiders. Anakin, who had sensed her suffering, tracked her to their camp, but she died in his arms, and in revenge he slaughtered everyone in the camp.
