Gial Ackbar

Gial Ackbar came from the ocean planet Mon Cala, and much of his life was bound up with that world. In time his species would provide the Rebel Alliance with its recognizable warships. While the Clone Wars raged, an old feud of the Mon Calamari with the Quarren, inflamed by the Separatists, turned into civil war on the planet. Ackbar, then a captain in the Mon Calamari Guard, directed its defense and backed Lee-Char, the young prince.

Within the Rebel Alliance he became one of the chief commanders. Before the fighting at Endor it was Ackbar who walked the officers through the plan to attack the second battle station, and once battle was joined he directed the fleet from the bridge of his flagship, Home One. Discovering that the Empire had been waiting for the assault, he changed the way his ships fought and gained as much time as the strike required to succeed. In the New Republic he received the rank of Grand Admiral and won many battles, the decisive one at Jakku among them.

After retiring, Ackbar lived on Mon Cala until Leia Organa talked him into coming back, this time to join the Resistance. He helped prepare the attack on Starkiller Base and spent the battle at headquarters. When D'Qar had to be evacuated in haste, the admiral was aboard the cruiser Raddus. First Order fighters struck the ship, their missiles smashed the bridge, and Ackbar died along with most of the command staff.
